Stress is a powerful thing.
It can stimulate our bodies to adapt in positive ways like building endurance or muscle, but it can also tell our bodies that we are constantly running from lions and that we should store everything we possibly can for survival.
Most people tell me their biggest stressor is their work. A Stressful job usually falls into the latter category above. This chronic stress tells your body that it is going through hard times and needs provisions for when food runs out. That can be useful when food is scarce, but when there is plenty, the body just continues to build fat. It is a vicious cycle that can be quite demoralizing when you are trying to reach health or fitness goals.
Thankfully, the fix is quite simple. Remove the stress. I said it was simple, not easy. But it does work. A former coworker of mine lost 50lbs in the six months after he quit his job. My understanding is that he wasn’t even focused on losing weight, but after he removed the stress of work, it just fell off. His body realized it was storing for a famine that wasn’t coming anymore so it let go of all its reserves.
I understand not everyone is in a position to quit their job. It might be worth starting a job search though. If that isn’t an option either, make sure you are focused on trying to reduce the stress in your life and you are getting excellent sleep. Do your best to find some outlet that allows you to let go of the stress you’ve built up.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
